Description

Task-based language teaching (TBLT) is a communicative approach which is both supported by research, and highly rated by students and other stakeholders. Increasingly, like other language teaching, TBLT courses are being implemented through technology. More fundamentally, many tasks that students need to work on are already technology-mediated, from taking part in online meetings through to cloud-based collaboration and gaming. This webinar aims to give a flavour of what is going on in tech-mediated TBLT, as well as offer practical tips on how to teach with technology and tasks in both online and blended environments.

TBLT can be greatly enriched as an approach to language pedagogy by the infusion of new technologies […] and the new technologies can become uniquely useful for language teaching when undergirded by programmatic TBLT thinking[.]

(González-Lloret & Ortega, 2014, p. 4)

The webinar will cover:

  • Principles of TBLT (some familiarity will help, but is not essential)
  • Needs analysis for tech-mediated TBLT
  • Task design and sequencing in synchronous and asynchronous contexts*
  • Focus on form in tech-mediated TBLT

*The webinar will not go into how to use specific platforms, but will aim to be general enough to adapt to the kinds of tools teachers and learners typically use, i.e. videoconferencing platforms, LMS, chat apps, etc.
